How I Formulate Incense for a Brand
Every brand already has a scent, even if it has never been made, because it lives in the colours, the textures, the words and the way a space feels when you first walk through the door. My work is to find that feeling and give it a body of woods, resins, herbs and flowers, formed by hand into something you can light and share.
We begin with the feeling rather than the smell
Our first conversation is never about notes, it is about people: who walks through your door, what you want them to feel in those first few seconds, and what you hope they carry home with them afterwards. Once we can name that state, whether it is grounded, held, awake, softened or celebrated, the plants begin to choose themselves.
I choose the plants for the state they create
Every material I work with has a character I know well, with resins that steady and clear, woods that ground, flowers that soften and spices that warm and wake, so a blend is really a conversation between plants that each bring something to the feeling we are building.
For Shari Vari Aphrodite's first ritual wear collection, Falling in Love with Your Shadow Self, the feeling was one of depth and descent, so the blend was built on agarwood, frankincense, myrrh, mugwort and vetiver, grounded and resinous, and made as Japanese style sticks without a bamboo core to sit beside the robes and kimonos.
A financial consultancy asked for something quite different, a calm and clear head through meetings, training and energy clearing sessions, and so sandalwood, patchouli, bay leaf, frankincense, cardamom and Ceylon cinnamon became Grounded Abundance, hand formed into mini cones and supplied unbranded.
I write the story that travels with it
Every blend comes with its own scent story, explaining what it is for, what is in it and how to use it, and this becomes the language your customers or guests meet on the belly band or the card, which is what turns a box of incense into a true part of your brand.
You sit with the sample before anything is made
Before production begins you receive a sample to burn in your own space, so you can notice how it moves through the room, how long it lingers and how people respond to it, and we adjust together until it feels completely right.
Everything is made by hand in small batches
Once you approve the blend, every piece is hand blended, formed and cured, whether as mini cones, Japanese style sticks or loose incense, and either co branded with your name alongside mine or supplied unbranded for your own packaging. For Natalie Marie Jewellery that became four blends, one for each element, released as a limited capsule beside the Saira collection and stocked in the Avalon showroom.
What you end up with is not simply another product on the shelf but a sensory extension of everything your brand already is, a scent that people slowly come to know as yours.
Bespoke formulations start from 50 units, with a lead time of 4 to 6 weeks from sample approval. To begin, email info@calmaplaces.com or visit Aromatic Partnerships.
